Halloween is a cherished tradition, but it is also a day when routines relax, crowds increase, and costumes make familiar faces harder to identify. Thoughtful preparation helps keep the occasion safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Open Communication
Plan the evening in advance. Establish a route, curfew, and check-in time. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult, while older children should travel in groups on well-lit streets. Assure the child or student that they may report any uncomfortable experience without fear of consequence.
Stay Alert
- If trick-or-treating, remain with groups throughout the evening.
- Visit only homes with porch lights on; never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle, and cross at crosswalks.
- Keep your phone stowed while walking.
- Act on concerns. If a situation feels unsafe, leave and notify a trusted individual.
Costumes and Candy
Select well-fitting, flame-resistant costumes without long hems. Provide reflective tape, a flashlight, or a glow stick to show visibility to drivers.
After receiving candy, discard unwrapped, opened, or unfamiliar items, and set aside anything that poses an allergy risk.
Digital Safety
Protect personal information, obtain permission before posting photos of others, and disable real-time location sharing.
